Cabinets for the Cummings
While Albert Cummings has a creative outlet in his music career, Christina Cummings expresses her creativity through the interior design side of the couple’s fourth generation custom home building business in Massachusetts. Her experience provides the inspiration for their personal home, dubbed “The House That Blues Built” in a nod to Albert’s extensive career as a blues musician, now under construction in the Berkshire Mountains.
“The Cummings were familiar with the versatility and craftsmanship of Wood-Mode’s cabinets because they often install them for their clients,” says Vonnie Marcyoniak, a kitchen and bath designer, owner of Kitchens by Herzenberg in Agawam, Mass. and Wood-Mode dealer who worked closely with the Cummings to design several spaces throughout their home. Marcyoniak helped the Cummings discover their inspiration and choose selections that include a mix of traditional and frameless cabinets throughout eight different rooms.
“I really like the quality of their finishes and the fact that they’ll match any color you want,” says Christina.
THE HEART OF THE HOME: THE KITCHEN
In the kitchen, Marcyoniak and Christina agreed that vintage navy-blue cabinets make a statement as the focal point of the island, accented with stacked white cabinets around the perimeter. The top row of the stacked cabinets will have glass fronts to showcase collectibles and art, while the rest will have solid white doors.
Christina’s favorite room in the house may be the pantry, which will be entirely fitted with navy-blue cabinets, including custom open and floating walnut shelves from Wood-Mode to match the cabinet interiors. The furniture-grade cabinets are outfitted throughout the pantry, which is open and visible from the kitchen, Marcyoniak says
“Hafele Lighting will be installed in all the rooms with Wood-Mode cabinets throughout the home,” Marcyoniak says. “In and under cabinet lighting changes the whole user experience, so when you open a drawer or cabinet it’s easy to find the serving spoon or bowl located in the back.”
TOUCH OF DRAMA IN THE GUITAR ROOM
The Cummings’ guitar room in the lower level, designed for acoustic perfection and a fun vibe to gather friends and family for nights of music, includes a full-size bar.
“We chose plain sawn red oak for the bar, which provides an interesting texture, and then finished it in ebony stain for a cool look like you’d find in a blues bar,” Marcyoniak says.
STORAGE GALORE FOR THE LAUNDRY ROOM AND BATHROOMS
Tall white frameless Wood-Mode cabinets provide storage in the laundry room, while the guest bathroom has cabinets finished in the exclusive Wood-Mode color “Jet Stream,” which is a pale blue gray.
The primary bathroom includes Wood-Mode cabinets with “Alpine White” finishes and furniture details with drawer interiors finished in walnut.
“It was great to collaborate with Albert and Christina to mix door styles, finishes and colors,” Marcyoniak says. “They didn’t want a cookie cutter look, but we were also able to create a nice flow throughout the house.”
